Tadej Pogačar Conquers the Tourmalet to Win Stage 6 and Seize the Tour de France 2026 Yellow Jersey

For six days the 2026 Tour de France had belonged to the breakaway artists and the sprinters. On Stage 6 it belonged, emphatically, to Tadej Pogačar. The reigning champion tore the race apart with a long-range assault over the legendary Col du Tourmalet, soloing to victory in Gavarnie-Gèdre and reclaiming the yellow jersey he had willingly surrendered during a patient opening week.

The stage had been circled on every rider's roadbook as the first true summit rendezvous of this Tour, and it lived up to its billing. The Tourmalet, one of the most feared climbs in cycling history, provided the launchpad. Pogačar attacked with a ferocity that none of his rivals could answer, distancing the entire group of favourites and riding clear over the summit and down toward the valley finish.

By the time he crossed the line in 4h 32' 07", the damage was done. Jonas Vingegaard, the Dane who has pushed Pogačar harder than anyone over the past few seasons, limited his losses to 2' 38" — a significant gap, but one that keeps him firmly in the fight. Pogačar's UAE Team Emirates teammate Isaac del Toro completed the stage podium at 2' 57", underlining the strength in depth of the sport's dominant squad.

The result transformed the general classification. Pogačar had begun the day nearly eight minutes down, having let a large breakaway take huge chunks of time earlier in the week while he conserved energy for exactly this kind of terrain. In one climb he erased that deficit and vaulted straight back to the top of the standings, a reminder that time given away in the first week can be reclaimed in a single explosive effort in the mountains.

Spare a thought for Torstein Træen. The Norwegian had worn the maillot jaune with pride and defended it with real conviction through the flat and rolling stages, becoming one of the feel-good stories of the race. But once the road pitched skyward and the favourites turned the screw, holding the wheels of Pogačar and Vingegaard proved a step too far. His time in yellow will nonetheless be remembered as one of the highlights of the opening week.

For Vingegaard, the day was an exercise in damage limitation rather than disaster. Two and a half minutes is a meaningful margin against a rider as complete as Pogačar, but the Tour still has multiple summit finishes and a decisive final week to come. The Visma | Lease a Bike leader will take heart from the fact that he did not crack completely, and history shows that this rivalry can swing in either direction.

Tactically, the stage was a masterclass in patience followed by aggression. Pogačar and his team spent the opening week refusing to chase, absorbing criticism for handing the breakaway so much rope. That composure now looks like calculated genius: rather than burn matches defending a jersey he did not want yet, he waited for the terrain that suits him best and struck with maximum effect.

The psychological blow may prove as important as the time gained. Sending a message of this magnitude on the first mountain stage can shape the way rivals ride for the remainder of a Grand Tour, forcing them onto the back foot and into reactive racing. Pogačar has served notice that anyone hoping to beat him will have to take enormous risks.

The Tour now climbs out of the Pyrenees and heads toward the transitional stages before the Alps and the final mountain showdowns. But the complexion of the race has changed utterly. What looked like an open, unpredictable edition has, at least for now, reverted to the familiar sight of Pogačar in yellow — and the rest of the peloton chasing shadows.
